It does not change what is on the list. Every item on the kit list is equipment we own and use on paid work, or have used enough to have a real opinion about. Nothing is there because it pays better.
Some things we recommend pay us nothing at all. OBS Studio is free and open source and we tell people to start there. Adobe Podcast Enhance Speech is free. On several items our honest advice is to buy the cheaper one — the RØDE PodMic at $99 instead of the SM7dB at $499, or software keying instead of a $1,000 hardware keyer at lower budgets. Those recommendations cost us money and they stay in.
The System Builder will actively tell you to spend less when your answers suggest you are overbuying. That is deliberate. We would rather you build something that works than something expensive.
These are the retailers we actually buy from. Where a link is not an affiliate link, it is just a link.
When you click through and buy, the retailer credits us a percentage of the sale — typically somewhere between 1% and 8% depending on the retailer and the product category. Cameras and computers pay the least; accessories pay more.
We never see your order. Not your name, not your address, not your payment details, not what else was in your basket. We see a number in a dashboard.
Listings on the gear market are between members. We take no commission, handle no payment and have no financial interest in whether something sells. Free to list, free to browse.
The lighting plots, the wiring diagrams, the operating instructions and the System Builder are all free and ungated, and they will stay that way. Most people reading them cannot afford to hire a studio yet. The affiliate commission is what makes it sustainable to keep publishing them instead of putting them behind an email wall.
